Mozilla Thunderbird - read you messages from an Hotmail accoun

Some time ago, it was needed to make use of an extension to access an Hotmail account from the Mozilla Thunderbird.
Now, the Hotmail, now called Windows Live Hotmail comes with POP3/SMTP, making it possible to easily view your account from a Hotmail.
Here's how to configure the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client:

Configuring Thunderbird

Configuring a Hotmail account in Thunderbird is done through several stages. The first is to create the Hotmail account in Thunderbird.
  • Launch Mozilla Thunderbird.
  • Go to Tools> Account Settings and click Add Account.
  • Select Email account and click Next.
  • Enter your name and your Hotmail address (hotmail or live), then click Next.
  • Fill in the right information, then click Next.
  • Select POP and enter the server name
  • Uncheck "Use Global Inbox overall"
  • Under "Incoming User Name" with your full Hotmail address (e.g and click Next.
  • Then choose a name for your account (Home account ...), then click Next.
  • Check the summary of your personal information, then confirm.

Receiving messages

Now configure the POP3 server to receive Hotmail messages in Thunderbird.
  • Click Tools, then Account Settings.
  • Select the account you have just created, click Server Settings.
  • In the right frame, complete the following information:
  • Server Name:
  • Username: Your Hotmail/Live account
  • Port: 995.
  • Security Settings: Select SSL.
  • If you want to keep your emails in Hotmail, check "Leave messages on server". Otherwise, uncheck this option.
  • Confirm all "OK".

Sending messages

The last step is to configure the SMTP server to send messages from Thunderbird (via Hotmail servers).
  • Click Tools, then Account Settings.
  • Go to Outgoing Server.
  • Select Outgoing (SMTP) mail server, then click the Add button.
  • Fill the different fields like this:
  • Description: Enter a short description of your account (Hotmail, Jean ...).
  • Server Name:
  • Port: 587.
  • Check Use a username and password.
  • Username: Your Hotmail/ Live acount.
  • Then select TLS, if available.
  • Confirm all "OK".
  • The configuration of Thunderbird to manage an Hotmail account is now complete!
  • Select the server you have just set, then click the Default button.
  • To check for new messages, click on "Open".
