How to reset Firefox settings: Windows, macOS, Linux

If your Firefox browser is unresponsive or experiencing random crashes, it may be necessary to completely reset your internet browser to its default settings.

How to reset Firefox settings to default?

  • Click the menu button at the top right corner of the browser, click Help and select More Troubleshooting Information.
  • Click Refresh Firefox, then Refresh Firefox in the confirmation window that opens, and Firefox will close to refresh itself.
  • Once finished, a window will list your imported information.
  • Click the Finish button, and Firefox will open.
  • Select whether you want Firefox to restore all or some windows and tabs and click the Let's go! button.

How to do if you can't open Firefox?

If you cannot open Firefox, you can launch it from the command line. If you still experience issues, we recommend uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox on your computer.

Windows

  • Open the Start menu by clicking on the Windows icon on the taskbar.
  • Type cmd and open the command line.
  • Type firefox.exe -safe-mode.

Linux

  • Open the terminal.
  • Type /path/to/firefox/firefox -safe-mode.

MacOS

  • Open the terminal.
  • Type /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode.
