Western Digital Passport Hard drive not detected

September 2015

Computer hardware, like an external hard drive, is extremely important for day-to-day computer usage as it enables the user to store extensive data, as well as share that data from one computer to another seamlessly. WD Passport 500 GB is one such hard drive. Normally the system recognizes the hard drive automatically when connected, and the icon appears in My Computer. However, it may be that the system fails to recognize the WD device. It is easy to solve this problem. One needs to change the Drive Letters and Paths or go through the Registry Editor to make the necessary changes.

My PC suddenly stopped detecting my Western Digital Passport 500 GB hard drive, what can be done?

  • Click Start > Run > type diskmgmt.msc and click on OK
  • Right-click on WD Passport Drive > Select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." >
  • Click "Add" button > Select your drive letter and click on OK
  • Note : If the drive letter is already assigned, then try changing the drive letter by clicking on the "Change" button instead of "Add" button in the above step
  • If the problem still persists:
  • Click Start > Run > type regedt32 and click on OK
  • Registry Editor will be opened
  • First backup your registry by going to File --> Export
  • Then expand the following key:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967- E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  • If you see any upperfilter or lowerfilters entries at the right side, simply delete them.
  • Close the registry and restart your PC.
