Most recent hard disks are equipped with SMART technology.
This system monitors the parameters of the disc drive (up time rotation, temperature, error rates, etc..) And eventually can detect potential disk failure.
If this technology is of course not 100% failproof, but it still works relatively well.
- On Linux, there is a program that can monitor the SMART parameters and avoid potential problems.
- To install, type: sudo aptitude install smart-notifier
- That's all.
- This program will remain invisible until everything goes well, and displays an alert if a problem occurs.
- If you see a SMART warning, make a copy of your files elsewhere (USB, external hard drive, burn CD / DVD ...).
