Windows - Removing the shortcut arrow

You notice on every shortcut icons, a tiny arrow.
What can be done to remove these arrows:

For Windows 2000/XP/2003


When you run the program, select shortcut in the Explorer Menu.

First of all you will have to download TweakUI: here

For Windows Vista


If you are using Windows Vista all you have to do in to look for
Vista Shortcut Overlay remover

After installing this software, run it:

Just choose the option desired then apply.
Note: You have to restart your computer for changes to take effect.

Via Registry


/!\ It is better to backup the registry before performing the below manipulation /!\
  • 1 - Click Start, Run.
  • 2 - Type in regedit and press [OK].
  • 3 - The Record/The registry editor opens.
  • 4 - Maximize the window if necessary
  • 5 - In the left pane, navigate to the following subkey:
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile
  • 6 - In the right pane, find the value IsShortCut
  • 7 - Right-click on this value, and then rename it in xIsShortCut - (the aim is to rename the subkey so that Windows does not recognize)
  • 8 - Close the registry editor and, if necessary, restart your PC.



To restore the shortcut arrows, follow the same method to the line 6.
  • We must identify the <gras>xIsShortCut value
  • Right-click on this value, and then rename it in IsShortCut
  • Close Registry Editor and, if necessary, restart your PC.</gras>

Windows 7


If you change the registry key mentioned above (IsShortCut), it disables the "pin" (start menu and task bar).
  • You just have to find this key (see method above):
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons
  • For Windows 7 64 bit, you can also modify this key, in the same way:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons
  • Once located, click it and go on the right side of the window.
  • Right click then "new string" and name it as : 29
  • Close the Registry Editor and, if necessary, restart your PC.
  • To restore, you can simply delete these two strings(line "29").
