NTLDR - Boot.ini - NTDETECT Missing (no installation CD)

NTLDR is the boot loader that is used for starting Windows operating systems. While booting, the computer may an show error message and this happens due to corrupt NTLDR and the NTDETECT.com file. It still possible to get rid of the error even without the Windows installation CD. Two requisites are needed for this - a USB key and a blank CD and a DVD. The procedure can be completed through the download and preparation of the NTLDR and the NTDETECT file and as well as the XP recovery console.

NTLDR - Boot.ini - NTDETECT Missing (no installation CD)



If you have the Windows installation CD read this tip: /faq/4112-ntldr-boot-ini-ntdetect-missing.
If you do not have the installation CD and receive one of the below error messages, this solution is for you!
NTLDR is missing         



NTLDR is missing. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart
NTLDR is compressed. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart
NTLDR is compressed. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart
NTDETECT V1.0 Checking Hardware ...
NTDetect Failed
Invalid Boot.ini

Prerequisites:

  • USB key (at least 300kb free)
  • A blank CD or DVD

Downloading and preparing the necessary files

  • Download the files ntldr and ntdetect.com here
  • Right click on the folder and extract all
  • Copy the NTLDR and NTDETECT files to your USB key

Downloading and preparing the recovery Console

  • Download the XP Recovery Console here
  • Right click on the folder and extract all
    • Then download Cd burner XP here
    • Right click on the folder and extract all
    • Open the program and select the .iso file for the Recovery console
  • Click Burn to burn your console to the blank CD/DVD
  • Insert your key and CD
  • Restart your PC to the Recovery Console
  • Type diskpart and locate the letter corresponding to your USB key
  • Press Esc to exit diskpart .
  • Type the following, changing X to the letter of the USB drive:

copy ntldr c:



copy ntdetect.com c:
  • Then type the command exit to restart
