Windows - The Desktop Gadgets are not displayed correctly

Desktop gadgets are not displayed correctly:
  • The gadgets can be displayed as black squares.
  • Gadgets have vertical green lines in the center,
  • Gadgets do not appear at all.
  • The gadgets can have blue exclamation points next to them.
  • The calendar gadget is displayed as an orange square..

The possible causes:

You have uninstall your Antivirus software

You have uninstall McAfee via the "Windows Add/Remove programs": I have encountered this problem with McAfee which may cause Windows Explorer to bug. Unless you use a dedicated removal tool (MCPR for McAfee) or a software like CCleaner, these antivirus software can leave traces on your PC which can cause conflicts with other applications.

There is a problem in the registry

  • Kill the sidebar.exe process.
  • Open the Task manager (run -> taskmgr.exe then go to the process column and kill the sidebar.exe process)
  • Click on Start> Run> regedit
  • Go to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\

If you see a key (folder) with a strange character (square, L, ... etc), remove it.

Gadgets stopped working after Windows update

A Windows update has gone wrong, try to uninstall the faulty update(s):
  • Open the Control Panel and click on Program > View installed updates.
  • Right-click on the update of your choice and select Uninstall.

If the above solutions don't work, you always try can try to restore your PC at an earlier point in time: System Restore on Windows Vista and 7
