Prevent Windows from restarting your PC after updates

After the installation of major updates, Windows will display a small notification asking you to restart your PC. You can skip this procedure and continue with your ongoing task, but there's a risk, as Windows may automatically shut down your PC after a certain period of time, without your consent!

How to prevent Windows from restarting your PC after a major update? The procedure is explained below:
  • From the Start Screen, type regedit and press Enter to access the registry.
  • Go to:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
  • Right-click on "Windows" - New> Key.
  • Rename the key as WindowsUpdate
  • Then right-click the WindowsUpdate key and select New> Key.
  • Rename the new key as "AU"
  • Again right click on this new key and select New > DWORD (32 bits).
  • Name the value NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers
  • Double click it and change the value to 1.

Tested on Windows 7 and 8.
