No sound from my laptop headphone jack

November 2015

When the headphone is jacked into a laptop, sometimes the sound might not come out, even though the system's speakers are working perfectly. This problem can be due to several reasons. Firstly, the user must try to see through looking at the Manage Audio Devices option whether the headphone icon is showing or not. One must set it manually as default if the icon is there. If the icon is missing, then it may be that the requisite drivers are missing or it could be that the headphone is out of order. In the case of the former, one can use Windows update which can help identify the missing drivers that need to be installed.

I have sound coming out of my laptop speaker but no sound from my headphone jack.

Go to the Control Panel, then to Hardware and Sound, then Sound. You should see something called Manage Audio Devices. Plug in your headphones and see if the headphone icon shows up.

If it doesn't, then either your drivers are missing or the headphone jack itself has failed. If it's that your drivers are missing, all you need to do is either use Windows update (it will detect many of your missing drivers) or go to the manufacturer's website and look for them there. Also try different headphones, just to check whether it is those that are the problem.

If the headphones do show up as an audio device, all you need to do is set them as default and that should fix the problem.
