Inline Message Translation in Skype

Skype, the Microsoft-owned instant messaging software, integrates real-time translation capabilities to help you converse with your friends from foreign-speaking countries. Skype offers to translate voice/video calls in 7 languages and instant messages in more than 50 languages.

Here are the instructions on how to set up message translation in Skype for Desktop.

How To Enable Skype Translator

The first step is to enable Skype Translator in the app settings. Open Skype and click on Tool > Options > Skype Translator and tick the Enable Skype Translator checkbox:


Click on Save to apply your new settings.

How To Set Up Skype Translator

The translation settings can be configured for each of your individual contacts. Go to your contact list and select a contact. Click on the Skype Translator button (will turn blue when enabled) and toggle the Translate Preview switch On:

Click on the drop down menu displayed next to your profile badge and select your preferred language. Select the contact's default language (language for translation) and then close the Translator Preview panel:

Moving forward, Skype will offer the translation of messages exchanged with the selected contact. You simply have to click on See Translation/See Original to view the translations:
