phpize: command not found

January 2017

PHP is one of the most widely used scripting languages for creating dynamic and interactive web pages. This language can be used in operating systems like Linux. Phpize is a command which is used to create a build environment. Sometimes users of the Linux environment may get an error which reads, phpize command not found. This error could appear at the time of installation of the pecl extension. To solve this problem of the phpize command not found, the user has to install the php5-dev package.

If during the installation of the pecl extension, despite the prior installation of PHP, you receive the following error message:
sh: phpize: command not found
ERROR: 'phpize' failed

you should be able to solve this problem under Debian: the package php5-dev containing the phpize command.

apt-get install php5-dev
