In Windows you may come across an 11708 error message when installing software or applications. Hardware and software manufacturers can identify the underlying problem of the error code. Microsoft Installer 3.1 is a component that does multiple jobs of installing, updating, maintaining and cleaning up software on your Windows system. The other parameters and letter codes elaborate on the location of the stored software that has caused the error during installation or storage. This can be caused by an incomplete installation, software erasure, hardware component failure or a virus and other malware. The error may be because you recently installed Microsoft Installer 3.1 or a higher version. To rectify this issue you may need to uninstall Microsoft Installer 3.1 and then try to install the software again.
You are installing software on Windows (e.g. JDK).
The installation fails and you have an error in the log of events, for example:
Event ID: 11708
Product: J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 5--Installation operation failed.
For more information, check the Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
