Can't log in to used laptop

I recently purchased a laptop secondhand from s pawn shop. I got it home and the original owner had it password protected.

Is there any way to disable the password or get around the user.

The phantom admin has been disabled and i have no way of reaching the original owner.

It's an old vista machine.
