Strange cursor malfunction

I have a curious problem with my laptop. After booting up, the cursor freezes even though it works fine before the home screen loads. I've tried using FN and F9 keys - it doesn't have any effect. This started while I was saving a document to a portable USB drive. Any suggestions gratefully received.

When you say "freezes", do you mean it quits blinking?

No, it refuses to move making it impossible to do anything or access menus, programmes etc. It's a touchpad, not a mouse.
