I bought a new phone and put a gmail and password on it and could not remember what is was so I set it back to factory settings and now it says that I got to know what I put on it the first time before I can get into it

resetting the phone has no effect on your mail password!

You will need use your Gmail recovery options. It should be able to send the recovery code to the phone.
