Sound doesn't work.

Dell Inspiron n5010 laptop Windows 7, sound from internal speakers doesn’t work. Headphones either. Don’t have external speakers. Never did. Sound works in Ubuntu. Also during Dell diagnostics testing. Not really interested in starting all over again. Will go over completely to Ubuntu yet. Also in tearing my laptop apart. As I said, not hardware issue. No new software. Windows updated. If I hear “Driver” again I’ll silently scream. Been two months. Neither “geek, techie” or electronically inclined.
Has little red circle with white x at foot of the sound/speaker icon. Not mute. Says “No speaker or headphones are plugged in”. Please help. Maddening.
