Toshiba Satellite cursor will either freeze or disappear

I'm having cursor problems with my laptop listed above. It will either freeze or disappear. I've tried the FN F9 to see if the touchpad was disabled, and also the FN F5 senario. I'm getting so aggravated with this, and need help on what will fix this. I use the 8.1 operating system.

When it freezes, press the WINDOWS KEY. Does the start menu appear?
