Del Inspiron 15 5000 series login problem

Hello,
I have a Del Inspiron 15 5000 series whenever I open it up my lock screen comes up with the date and time as normal but whenever I press a key key to login all that happens is the date and time disappears with the background and no place to type in my password. I have turned it off and on again and left it overnight than tried again but the same thing happens. It has been three days now and I have made no progress. I would be really grateful if anyone could help. Thank you

What happens if you boot into safe mode?

Hi thank you for the advise, I didn't know how to boot in safe mode but have looked up several techniques and I think you have to be able to get onto your home screen where you can select the icons but I cannot get there as my computer will only let me go as far as the date and time is this right? And if I right or left click it does nothing either. Do you know any way of starting you computer in safe mode with the keys or any other help would be great. Thank you.

Microsoft office 365 is not an operating system, it's a programme.

An operating system would be something like Windows 7 or 8 or 10
