Transfer from mp3 cd to a mp4 player

Hello,
im trying to transfer stuff off an mp3 cd to an mp4 player for a friend. and its not doing it. i have transferred stuff off a regular cd to a mp3 player before, and its worked fine...everytime. but, i cant figure this out. is there some kinda software, or converter, that you need, or something?
