Error while trying to do system restore

Hello,
please can someone help; my friend has given me their laptop to do a full factory restore - laptop is toshiba satellite L40, OS is window vista. Well i go into the advanced boot options and click on repair your computer and it goes through as if its loading up windows and an error comes up system recovery options the installed program cannot start.click ok to turn off the computer.

no matter what option i choose in the advanced boot options i still get this message.

she doesnt have any discs to do recovery and doesnt mind if everything gets wiped off as she has photos and kids school stuff on a disc.

any advice appreciated
