click your start button
click search(find)
type msconfig
press enter (return)
tick selective startup in the general tab
in startup tab untick msnmsgr or messenger or both (whichever appears in your startup
click apply and ok
the pc will shut down and reboot
when it reboots it will bring up a message that the system configuration has been changed.
tick the box which says "don't show this message again"
you're done. messenger will only start up when you ask it to and not every time the pc starts
