Running dvd player to computer for audio

not sure if this is the right place to put this

i'm trying to run a dvd player through my computer so the audio will play on the computer's speakers (the speakers are 5.1)

i've got the dvd player connected to the computer by a coax digital audio connection, the computer being set to listen to it as a recording device, and it plays sound just fine when i put in a cd that plays in stereo, but when i put in a dvd that plays in surround, i hear nothing.

any way to fix this?
