Sound problem with hdmi cable to hdtv

I have a laptop that runs Windows Vista and I'm trying to play my dvds to my HDTV using an HDMI cable. The video comes through fine and the sound works in some areas.

When testing the speakers, the sound comes out of the tv. However, when I move the window over to the TV, the sound continues to come out of laptop speakers. Or when I disable the speakers through playback, no sound comes out anymore.

I cannot enable any HDMI playback because it doesn't show up. The only option I have available is SPDIF Interface which plays some sounds through the TV (when I test the SPDIF Interface, I get the tones that come out of the HDTV).

Also, I believe I have an nvidia GeForce Go 7600 as the audio driver?

I'm trying to figure out where the problem lies because all forums seem to have similiar problems to mine, but either their sound works or doesn't.

Any suggestions as to what I can do to fix this would be most appreciated. I'd just really like for all of the sound to be able to come out of the TV.

play a song from your library
go to control panel
hardware and sound
manage audio devices
playback
if HDMI is not there then right click
show disabled devices
left click HDMI
click set default (green arrow will move)
click OK
close all windows
to reverse just change HDMI to speakers
