Dell Latitude D620 laptop screen gone blank

Hello,
i have a Dell Latitude D620 and the screen has failed me.
it runs on windows XP
first thing that happened was my screen strated blinking on and off.
so i shut it down, upon restart i noticed a few unusual things:
1) there were vertical lines protruding from the dell logo
2)on the typical black booting screen the blank spaces were filled up with $ signs and some of the ltteres had been switched for other characters
3) and finaly when it went to go to the log on page, it was a blank screen.

i figure this was a virus, so i tried starting it in safe mode with command prompt. i tried to scan the protected documents for viruses and it said there was an error code 0X000006 ba
after several different attempts i re tried f12 which took me to my boot menu and i selected the second option and now i have a blue screen that tells me it is a stop error screen.

whats going on and how do i fix it???
