Hello,
HELP!
My Dell Studio Laptop running Windows Vista crashed with a BSOD error (Blue Screen Stop) Error. I Ran Diagnositcs and found a bad spot on the HD. Tried to run chkdsk /f but it would not run while in GUI mode under Advanced Recovery Options.

I also tried to Restore Factory Image under Advanced (F8 while booting) and that got halfway thorugh then reported a simple "Red X' Windows style error with no info on the error (during the reformat process).

Now, I can't boot to the F8 menu to try and rebuild \ restore. I can only boot to the Blue Screen Stop error and run F2-Bios Setup and F12-Boot Options including Diags.

Diagnositics show an Error 0146-"Log contains listing of previous errors".

I don't have a Dell CD that should have came with the Laptop - it's only a year old.

And to top things off, my Warranty expired 8 days ago!

Does anyone know where I can download an Install Image for Dell Laptops?
A CD or Flash "Vista Boot" disk or ANYTHING to try and repair this machine??

ANY help would be appreciated - before I thown this thing out the window of a moving car! LOL

Thank you in advance!

I see and it's very bad indeed, I would hate having this error code

You will sound evident to you that the error code means that Windows is unable to read the partition or start disk.

This occurs after disk partitionning, the addition of a new disk or after updating the disk controler.

If you have a UDMA disk, you must check that it well connected with a 80 wire cable with 40 broches. You must reintialize the default bios settings.

It's also possible that you hard disk file system is be damaged. In such a case, reboot the machine with the recovery console and enter the command fixboot.

Good luck

That's what I thought. Unfortunately, I can't boot back to the Recovery console.

What I was looking for was a way to download a bootable CD that I could run fixboot on the C drive from.

Would you know anywhere I can download something that I can put on a bootable CD to run the disk utilities?

Thanks again!

Do you mean that you purchased your Dell laptop and that Dell did not give you CD's for it? Very surprising!

That's exactly what happened. I know - it surprised me also.

Do you know where I can download a "boot CD" for Vista?

Thank You!

Sorry I don't know. However, It was a big mistake on Dell's part. Those CD's are yours, you paid for them, they are part of the package. I urge you to contact them and claim what is yours.
