Could upgrading my hard drive slow my laptop?

Hello,
i recently upgraded to a 250GB hard drive and ever since, my laptop is slower and freezes multiple times when running processes. the freezes wont be longer than a few seconds, but they reoccur until i close processes. could the new hard drive be the cause of this? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

hi there,
is it a Sata or IDE HDD?
also if you have product model etc. that would be helpful in determining your problem.
