Using ide hard drive with sata connection

Hello, I am trying to help a friend to add a 2nd hard drive (WD 80GB IDE) to a HP system (Vista). I have installed a ide/sata adapter, installed the ide drive, connected it to the motherboard, but it does not show as a device on the computer, either under the device manager listing of disk drives or using Windows Explorer. Any suggestions?

Check with system manufacturer or hard drive manufacturer check for drivers for the system to recognize an IDE drive on an SATA connection or the adapter manufacturer/ Also chec the BIOS to make sure the drive selection are set to AUTO if that system bios has that feature.
