Cannot run programs in Windows XP

Hi,

I am having windows XP SP3 and for the past 2 days my program files are not opening.
What i have seen that when i open them they appear in the processes list but their memory usage gets stuck on some particular value and they do not open. When i open Firefox or Nvidia control panel the comp gets hanged.
Just to add winrar also gives the same problem
I have tried doing a system restore but that also does not work.
Please help me!!!

Can you run programs in safe mode?

what happens when you try for a system restore?
