Explorer.exe in task manager 100+ times

Hello,
Windows 7 - task manager - explorer.exe 100+ times and growing. Nothing works - circle icon persists. What can I do, please?

Sounds like an infection.

can you download malwarebytes from another computer https://www.malwarebytes.com/ and install onto the PC and run a full scan.

can't run anything - only 1% of CPU left with the now 150+ explorer.exe. I can't even do an in place repair of WIN 7 since I can't get the setup.exe to run. Darn - I'll have to do clean reinstall. Thanks for thinking with me.

That would have been a last resort.

i'd have recommended restarting in safe mode (hit F8 repeatedly) until you get an advanced menu and go to safe mode with networking..

if you require no more assistance i'll close this.
