With it plugged into the windows PC go to start > right click my computer > click manage

choose disk management on the left side.

in there you should see the 500GB drive.

right click it and format it.

I have the same problem. If I format it the way you suggested, do I lose the data present in my external hdd?

Ok. Is there anyway I can protect my data and also use it with windows?
I can't afford to lose the data.

You could try putting it back into the Mac to see if you could open it?

alternatively in windows you could try running the following command through comand prompt:

convert <driveletter>: /FS:NTFS

I connected it into the Mac and saved my files and than formatted it. Its working properly now.

I had also tried the command before formatting but it said that the format was already ntfs.

Thank you for the help.
