Help! DVD and DVD-R confusion!

Hello,

My boyfriend's mom loves this movie she saw on the Lifetime Movie Network. I wanted to purchase the DVD for her, but the only format that I found available is DVD-R. The lifetime/history channel website didn't have any DVDs for sale. Since the DVD-R is all I could find, I'm thinking about getting it, but will that format play on a regular DVD player? If not, how do I get it to play? How do I transfer the format, burn it, manually format DVD player/TV, or whatever I have to do that's even legal? Will DVD+R format play on regular DVD players or no?
