WD External Hard Drive asking to be formatted

My WD External Hard Drive which I have used for over 2 years is suddenly asking to be formatted in order for me to open it. I am afraid that if I say yes it will erase everything I have in it. What should I do?
I have tried it in different laptops and it is always the same.

you can format it , then you just recover the files

Sorry, but this is an indication that the drive has failed and there is most likely nothing you can do to recover the data.
