VLC media player only plays youtube videos

Unlike most users in general, I can watch youtube videos using VLC (2.1.5). However, I cannnot view videos from any other sites. I enter the url in "open network stream" and it acts like it is going to open but doesn't. I reset preferences, updated software, allow it thru my firewall and antivirus still nothing, unless I want to watch youtube videos (boring).
any suggestions?

how're you watching youtube videos with VLC?

have you ripped the video?

Youtube uses flash player for video playback.

I choose "open network stream", enter the url, and select play, thats' how.
I don't want to rip the "youtube" video.
My ultimate quest is to record snipets of long "flv" videos as I watch them in VLC.
