I have a wonderful old (6 years) Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop which continues to perform well despite the limitations of Windows 8.1.

I would like to upgrade the storage system by replacing the 500GB HDD with a new SSD, thereby (I hope) extending the life of my computer and enhancing its performance. Perhaps I am dreaming - please tell me if that's the case.

Otherwise, please advise which SSD I should be looking at. Currently I am considering either a Samsung MZ-7TE1T0BW or the Crucial M550 CT1024M550SSD1, both 1 TB. Also the Samsung MZ-7KE1T0BW which is more expensive than its brother but I don't know why ?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

I believe that Dell only has a SATA controller with a 1.5 GBps interface. You need SATA III (6GBps) to see dramatic results with the new SSD. So you get less "bang for the buck" with a new SSD.

I would not advise you to speed $600 plus for any upgrade to a 6 year old computer.

Hi xpcman. Thanks. I guess deep down that's what I'm afraid of. I just needed to hear it from someone else - and with a reason such as the SATA controller not being up to the task. I can see that my Dell's days are numbered ... ! Sad. Thanks again for taking the trouble to reply. Steve.
