Can't free space for hard drive western digital elements for Mac

Hello,

I have a WD elements hard drive 2 TB and I have deleted files but the space isn't cleared and I'm just wondering if I go to disk utilities and erase clear space will it delete all the files on the external hard drive ? Or just clear the space of the items I've dragged to the trash can?

Select the drive image in Finder
Go to Finder/Empty Trash
Empty Trash

You're done!

I think disk utility would be better but a think just go to disk utility and partition all of it it always works
