Restore lost microsoft applications from OSX: they were working

Hello,
I have Mac OS 10.9.5. It was running all my PC applications, Word, Excel, etc until i 'cleaned' my Mac yesterday and stupidly dropped Microsoft Office.
My questions: 1. how could i have been running Microsoft when everyone says that OS10 won't do it. It did for me.
2. how can i get it back, because ALL my files, documents, etc PDF and Word won't open.

That's because Microsoft makes a version of Office for the Mac.

so far it is refusing to open my Mac Office because it says that it is already installed. so i am now getting a techie to help figure that one out.
