My ipod nano 5th gen only displays the Apple icon when I reset

Hello,
I'm trying to reset my ipod, but it only displays the apple icon. Why doesn't it go to the menu screen? Please help! I've tried a few different 'reset' configurations and none of them will get it past the Apple icon.

Update... apparently my wall charger is bad. I plugged my ipod into the pc via usb and it's charging now, and turning on.
