Hooking External monitor to laptop

The screen on my Compaq 6715 B laptop is broken I'm trying to hook my Acer flat screen computer monitor as an external monitor to it I hit the blue FN button and then at 4 the monitor flat screen lights up but is only white is there something I need to do other than that please help

What operating system is it?

Hook the external monitor up to it, and press WINDOWS +P. Select Duplicate. It may be that the laptop is trying to bring up a higher resolution than the monitor can handle! Let us know if the P button works!
