Dell Inspiron wont go past logo screen

My laptop wont boot properly, whenever i turn it on it gets stuck at the logo screen. It will load for a bit, then the screen goes black for a few seconds, before showing the splash screen minus the dell logo. I've let this screen run for hours, so it's not a matter of time. Any help is welcome, thanks.

can you get to the Dell hardware diagnostic? I think it's F11 after you see the logo.

I am currently in safe mode, copying all my important stuff to a zip

good idea. Since you can use safe mode it appears you have a system problem with the Windows code or a registry error.

What version of Windows are you using? With Win 7 you can try a system repair from the DVD.
