How To Share Files Between Two Windows PCs

Hi!
I'm new to networking so please forgive this basic question regarding this article ( http://ccm.net/faq/27359-how-to-share-files-between-two-windows-pcs ).

it would be helpful if there was a simple diagram showing how the Ethernet crossover cable was physically hooked up. Is it directly from PC to PC or PC to router, etc...?

You can install shareit in both pc or you can transfer via bluetooth

Thanks, but I don't have WiFi on either PC so I must use a cable.

You must go pc to router

Recent articles I've read suggest the 2 PCs should be connected by a crossover Ethernet cable; and had no mention of a router. Do you have a link supporting your suggestion?
