2015 was a good year for Google, with downloads soaring through the roof across the globe.
Reports are coming in from Google Play's 2015 performance, and the results are impressive. Google Play took a major lead over Apple when it came to app downloads, and many of its emerging markets played a critical role in this growth. Included among the top five biggest customers in 2015 was Indonesia, which according to reports from Google, saw a 50% increase in downloads from the previous year. Additionally, Indonesia is now seeing a smartphone penetration of 43%. Also included in the top five Google Play downloaders were India, Mexico, Turkey and Brazil. In fact, Google reported that almost 50% of its growth from 2014 downloads came from emerging markets.
Even though Google Play generated significantly less revenue than Apple's App Store in 2015, Google enjoyed 100% more app downloads than its rival. One of its distinct advantages is its position in certain emerging markets such as Indonesia, where mobile device adoption is growing fast. The most profitable app category for Google Play was once again Games, with Communication apps taking second place. According to analytics company App Annie, the top game from iOS and Google combined last year was "Clash of Clans." Other titles on the list include "Monster Strike" in second place, "Game of War - Fire Age" in fourth place, and "Candy Crush Saga" in fifth place.
