On Tuesday, Google rolled out a new Search feature to help users plan their vacations from their mobile devices.
"Today we're introducing something to make all this easier: Destinations on Google, which helps you discover and plan your next vacation, right from Google Search on your phone," said Radhika Malpani, Engineering Director of Travel at Google in a blog post on the new feature. To use Destinations, simply use Google Search on your mobile device for the location you'd like to visit and add the word "destination." From there, the feature will show you travel options for that location. "Destinations integrates a deep understanding of all the places in the world with Google Flights and Hotel search, so you can see available flight and hotel prices instantly," explained Malpani. Destinations can also be triggered when searching locations and activities; Google Search will recommend places that match these queries. The feature also offers a "Flexible Dates" filter that refines results by month and an "Explore" tab that shows the location's weather and most popular times.
"These days, mobile phones make it easier than ever for you to sneak in vacation dreaming and planning here and there — in line at the coffee shop, waiting at the doctor's office, or on your way to meet a friend," explained Malpani on the decision to make the feature exclusively mobile. "… [A]ccording to our internal data for google.com, we saw a whopping 50 percent increase in travel-related questions on mobile phones." Destinations works on Android and iOS devices using Google Search but is limited to users in the United States and a few select markets at launch.
