In another step in its initiative to bring the whole internet to HTTPS, Google has secured all blogspot domains.
(CCM) — In September, Google began rolling out HTTPS support for blogspot domain blogs as an option, but now the company says that it is launching HTTPS versions of every blogspot domain blog. On Tuesday, Google announced this change, saying that now "visitors can access any blogspot domain blog over an encrypted channel." As part of this launch, Google is removing the HTTPS Availability setting for blogspot users. Previously, users needed to turn on this setting to offer an HTTPS version of their blog, but this feature will now be turned on by default.
While all blogspot blogs will have an HTTPS version, users will need to turn on a new setting called HTTPS Redirect to ensure visitors only visit the secure version of their site. If you enable this setting, all visitors will be automatically redirected to the HTTPS version of your blog, even if they go to the HTTP version initially. If you choose to turn off this setting, visitors will be able to visit both the encrypted and unencrypted version of your blog. Google warns that "mixed content may cause some of your blog's functionality not to work in the HTTPS version," but says that it is working on fixing the errors it can. "To help spot and fix these errors, we recently released a mixed content warning tool that alerts you to possible mixed content issues in your posts, and gives you the option to fix them automatically before saving," explained security software engineer Milinda Perera in a post on the Google Security Blog. Existing links and bookmarks to your blog will not be affected by this change.
