Cyanogen OS 13.1's new MOD platform gives old Android phones unprecedented new powers.
(CCM) — The latest update to Cyanogen OS allows users to add powerful features, called "mods," to their Android phones thanks to the operating system's new MOD platform. Cyanogen 13.1 is currently being rolled out to OnePlus One smartphones.
The first batch of mods that make use of the new platform includes two mods. The first is for Skype, which allows users to make Skype calls and access Skype contacts directly from the main Phone app. The second is for Cortana (available in the U.S. only), which provides voice control for the camera by letting users tell Cortana to "take a selfie" to start an automatic countdown. Other mods include one for Microsoft Hyperlapse, which allows users to create smoothed, stabilized time-lapse videos directly from the Camera app, and one for Microsoft OneNote, which lets users save important messages to OneNote for future reference or to take a note while on a call directly from the Phone app.
Microsoft announced a partnership with Cyanogen to integrate Microsoft service into the operating system back in April, but not all the new mods are Microsoft-related. The Cyanogen OS 13.1 update also includes a Twitter mod which lets users keep an eye on trending Tweets and news directly from the lock screen without having to unlock the device or open the Twitter app.
