Facebook has rolled out its new human-curated Featured Events section, alerting users of popular upcoming events.
(CCM) — On Monday, Facebook unveiled a new human-curated feature available on its website and mobile applications called "Featured Events". The section includes information for users about upcoming events near them that have been chosen by a curation team at the company. This feature is an improvement on Facebook's old Events section, which used an algorithm that selected events based on events that a user's friends have RSVP'd to as well as a user's interests and previously-attended events. Featured Events will not only include categories and time frames for chosen events, — like "This Weekend" — but it will also give users a longer time to prepare for events than they had before.
Facebook's Events Product Manager, Aditya Koolwal, explained the goal behind the initiative, saying, "What we do is have a team of people who are basically looking at events on Facebook that have broad appeal, that a lot of people could go to, and they’re highlighting ones they think will be good to list out... you can think about it like a weekend or weekly digest of cool stuff that you can do in your city." Featured Events is being tested out first in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C., with plans to expand it to other cities if successful.
