Snapchat will launch mini versions of popular TV shows with exclusive content on the service in the coming weeks.
(CCM) — Snapchat has gotten a leg up on its messaging app rivals with the Monday announcement that it will soon have its own mini-TV shows on the service, according to reports by Variety. The company has teamed up with NBCUniversal to launch versions of a number of shows, including The Voice, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and SNL. Rather than simply using clips from the original TV shows, the Snapchat versions will include new content created specifically for the app. The first Snapchat TV show will be The Voice, starting on Aug. 22 and featuring the coaches for the coming season — Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton — taking a look at user-submitted performance videos for the chance to appear on the TV series. This will be followed on Sep. 8 by an E! News weekly Snapchat series called The Rundown, hosted by E! News correspondent Erin Lim.
As part of the multi-year deal, NBCUniversal will also develop and sell advertisements for each Snapchat TV show. The deal is not the first that NBCUniversal has made with Snapchat: earlier this year the company announced plans to work with Snapchat on an Olympic Games channel to bring highlights to the messaging app and to encourage users to tune in to watch Olympic events on TV.
