Microsoft has simplified the look and feel of Cortana for iOS and Android, and added productivity features.
(CCM) — Microsoft has given its Cortana virtual assistant a makeover on iOS and Android in an attempt to tempt users away from Siri and Google Now, those mobile operating systems' built-in virtual assistants. Microsoft's own Windows Phone mobile operating system has all but disappeared, so encouraging Cortana's adoption on third-party mobile operating systems may prove to be crucial if it is to have a long-term future. The new-look Cortana app has a simplified look and feel with a more attractive purple background replacing the previous black, white, and blue color scheme. It also introduces a new feature called "quick actions," which provides easy access to weather, calendar, notes, and reminders with a single tap. The Cortana app has been optimized to run faster on both operating systems, Microsoft says.
Despite aiming for Cortana to become ubiquitous, Microsoft has been slow to offer its iOS and Android apps outside the U.S. But the company announced that, as of the current release, they will now be available in the U.K. for the first time. The new Cortana for Android is available now, and the iOS app will be available in Apple's App Store in "a few weeks," according to the company.
