YouTube's new desktop layout is designed to make the site less distracting and to look more like its mobile apps.
(CCM) — YouTube is undertaking a radical overhaul of its desktop design to focus more on the video content itself and to make the site easier to use, according to the site's official blog. The new design is being previewed by a small group of users around the world before being released more broadly.
The key principles of the new design, according to the blog post, are simplicity, consistency, and beauty. "The new design is clean and fresh, thanks to the removal of visuals that can distract from your browsing experience," it says. It adds that it is also "aligned across Google platforms, including the YouTube mobile app, while still providing the features you know and love."
The new look is built on a new, faster framework called Polymer, and YouTube has introduced a new theme for the design called Dark Theme. "Developed to cut down on glare and let you take in the true colors of the videos you watch, Dark Theme turns your background dark throughout your entire YouTube experience," the blog explains.
Users can try out YouTube's new look at youtube.com/new, and then return to the current design by selecting "Restore classic YouTube" from the Account menu.
