Amazon has begun taking pre-orders for Element televisions, which feature its Alexa intelligent assistant.
(CCM) — TVs with Amazon's Alexa intelligent assistant built in are now available for pre-order, ahead of a June 14, 2017 release date. The company announced in January that it was partnering with three low-cost TV brands — Element, Westinghouse, and Seiki. The partnerships bring Alexa to television hardware, and the four Element "Fire TV Edition" models are the first results of the new joint effort.
Alexa can be accessed using a microphone on the TV's remote. It can be used to carry out TV-specific tasks, such as changing input sources or channels, searching for shows, and controlling playback, such as playing the next episode of a series. Alexa can also do the same things when accessed through an Echo speaker, such as providing a weather forecast, ordering an Uber, or adjusting a compatible thermostat.
The Element range consists of a 43-inch model for $449, a 50-inch model for $549, a 55-inch model for $649, and a 65-inch model for $899. All four TVs offer 4K resolution, but lack premium features such as support for high dynamic range (HDR) content. TV-over-antenna can be paused and rewound, and shows of up to 60 minutes can also be saved onto a USB stick or SD card.
