A new version of Samsung's flashship smartphone has been designed to military specifications.
(CCM) — The ruggedized version of Samsung's Galaxy S8 smartphone will be available in stores from Friday, the company has revealed. The Galaxy S8 Active has been designed around a metal frame and is built to withstand a five foot drop onto a flat surface without its screen shattering. The phone is also water resistant in up to five feet of water for up to 30 minutes, it and has passed military specification MIL-STD-810G for its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, dust, shock and vibration, and low pressure or high altitudes.
The S8 Active is available in Meteor Gray or Titanium Gold, and features Samsung's Bixby intelligent interface, a 4,000 mAh battery, a 12 MP rear camera and 8 MP front camera, and security features such as fingerprint and iris scanners.
Despite its military specification, the company is targeting the phone at all consumers. But Samsung specifically calls out "hard-working parents, corporate athletes, and outdoor enthusiasts," as customer segments which are likely to be interested in the new device.
Many consumers have criticized smartphone manufacturers, such as Apple and Samsung, for the fragility of their products and also for common occurrences of cracked screens and water damage. According to IBISWord research, the market for screen replacements and other cellphone repairs is worth over $4 billion annually and is growing at a rate of about 3% per year.
